Radish – Cherry Belle

UntitledThis is my first attempt to grow a root vegetable using hydroponics.  It will be interesting to see what happens.  Will there be enough room inside the 2-inch net-pots for the radish to develop, or are larger net-pots required?  2 different types of media will be tested: rockwool and perlite.

Jan 3, 2016 = Day 0.  Plants started from seed (Botanical Interests).  Seeds sowed in 1.5-inch rockwool  cubes or perlite in 2-inch net-pots.  In the case of perlite, a thin slice (1/4-inch) of rockwool was placed at the bottom of the net-pot to help keep the perlite from falling out. Moistened with dilute fertilizer solution: 1 mL (1/5 tsp) Dyna-Gro Liquid GROW 7-9-5 per gallon of tap water.  N-P-K (in ppm): 18-10-11.  pH = 7.0.

Jan 5, 2016 = Day 2.  Plants germinated, placed directly under a fluorescent light (2 ft. T8 bulb, 17W, 6500k) for 14-16 hours per day.

Jan 7, 2016 = Day 4

Jan 8, 2016 = Day 5.  Installed plants into small rectangular 1.5-gallon container.  Hydroponic solution composed of 1.125 gal (18 cups) tap water, 6.75 mL Dyna-Gro Liquid GROW 7-9-5, 0.225 mL Dyna-Gro Pro-TeKt.  N-P-K (in ppm): 111-62-66.  pH = 6.5.

Jan 12, 2016 = Day 9
Jan 19, 2016 = Day 16.  Cherry Belle (left), French Breakfast (right)
Jan 19, 2016 = Day 16.  No radishes are developing.

Jan 20, 2016 = Day 17.  Thinned to 1 plant per net-pot.  Transferred plants to indoor grow room, where they get 8 hours LED light per day, plus 2 hours of sunlight.

Feb 2, 2016 = Day 30.  Cherry Belle (left), French Breakfast (right)
Feb 2, 2016 = Day 30.  Radishes developing.

Feb 9, 2016 = Day 37.  Harvested all 4 radishes.  The radishes grown in rockwool were bigger than the ones grown in perlite.  Almost all of the hydroponic fluid was gone at this point.

Sliced radishes on a bed of hydroponic Red Sails lettuce.  Delicious!
